Saving from YouTube
How to save YouTube videos so you can find them later
Share the video, Short or post to Recalo. It reads the title, the description and its links, what's said in the video and the top comments, then saves what's in it: a recipe with its ingredients and steps, a restaurant or place, a book, a movie, or a note. Later, ask for it in your own words, in the app or from ChatGPT, Claude or Muse.
What you need
- Recalo on your iPhone or iPad. A free app that keeps what you save from other apps in one organized, searchable place. Download here. On Android or a computer, use the web app.
- The YouTube app. Nothing to connect.
- Optional: ChatGPT, Claude or Muse, to ask for your saves from there.
Save a video in three steps
Works for videos, Shorts and community posts.
-
Tap Share under the video.
Recalo shows up in your iPhone's share menu like any other app.
-
Choose Recalo and tap send.
Don't see Recalo? Scroll the row of apps to the end, tap More, and switch it on. On Android or a computer, copy the video's link and paste it into the Recalo web app.
-
Recalo reads the whole post.
For a video or Short: the title, the description, what's said in the video and the top comments. For a community post: its text, and the text in each photo and what it shows. So a recipe that's only said out loud still comes through.
What each kind of post becomes
A cooking video gets its ingredients and steps
Plenty of YouTube cooks never write the recipe down. Recalo takes it from what's said on camera or from the description. Plan it for a night and cook along in Cook mode, with a timer for each step.
A how-to becomes a note with the steps
A tile-grouting tutorial or a bike repair video turns into a note that writes the steps out, so you don't have to scrub back through twenty minutes to find one.
A long talk turns into a searchable note
An hour-long interview, lecture or podcast episode is kept as a note of what it covered. Months later, ask for "that talk about sleep" and it's there.
A travel vlog becomes a note of its stops
A week-in-Japan vlog becomes a note listing every temple, market and noodle bar it visits, each stop with a link to its website or to Maps.
A restaurant review is saved as a place
A video about one restaurant saves the restaurant itself, with its address and phone when they can be found, ready to open in Apple or Google Maps.
Shorts get the same reading
A 30-second recipe or a quick tip is read the same way, spoken words included.
A book or film review saves the book or film
A book review saves the book, cover art and author included. A film review saves the movie with its poster, cast and plot.
More on the same topic goes where it belongs
Keep a note on your vegetable garden? Share a video on companion planting, and Recalo will offer to "Add it to Vegetable garden" or to "Save it on its own". To-dos go onto the checklist they belong on.
YouTube's Watch later and playlists, and where they stop
YouTube's Save puts a video or Short in Watch later or a playlist, and you can share a playlist or invite friends to add to it. Creators can split a long video into chapters, so you can jump back to one part. A video set as made for kids can't go in a playlist or Watch later.
But YouTube's help pages don't document a search inside a playlist, or a way to save a community post. And a saved video is still a video: the recipe or the list of places stays inside it. Using both works fine: keep Watch later for watching, and share what you want to use to Recalo.

Good to know
iPhone and iPad. Sharing from YouTube works in the iPhone and iPad app. On Android or a computer, paste the link into the web app.
Free to start. Recalo is free to download. Importing uses AI, so regular use needs Recalo Pro, $3.49 a month or $34.99 a year. What you've saved stays yours to search either way.
Questions
Can I save YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Share a Short the same way, and Recalo reads it like any other video.
How do I save a recipe from a YouTube video?
Share the video to Recalo. It saves the recipe with its ingredients and steps, from the description or from what's said in the video.
Does Recalo save the video itself?
No. It keeps the link to the video and saves what's in it, like the recipe or the places.
Can I save a YouTube community post?
Yes. Share it like a video, and its text and top comments are read.
Does a video with no description still save?
Yes. Recalo reads what's said in the video and the top comments, so the recipe or the steps still come through.
Why can't I add some videos to Watch later?
YouTube doesn't let you add a video that's set as made for kids to a playlist or to Watch later.
