Saving from Instagram

How to save Instagram posts so you can find them later

Share the reel or post to Recalo. It reads the caption, what's said in the video, the top comments, and the text in each photo and what it shows, then saves what's in it: a recipe with its ingredients and steps, a restaurant or place, a book, a movie, or a note. Later, ask for it in your own words, in the app or from ChatGPT, Claude or Muse.

An Instagram reel from The San Francisco Standard on the best tacos in SF
A taco reel becomes a taco crawl, with picks from the comments. A recipe reel becomes a recipe with its ingredients and steps. A recipe video becomes a recipe, nutrition included. Add to list puts its ingredients on your grocery list. A talk becomes a note of its key points. A book thread becomes a reading list. A restaurant post becomes the restaurant, with its address and phone. An AI Mode answer becomes a hike list you keep. The shows a reel recommends land on Home, next to everything else. A trip planned with Claude becomes a note you can share. Say a movie and it lands with its rating and plot.

What you need

  • Recalo on your iPhone or iPad. A free app that keeps what you save from other apps in one organized, searchable place. Download here. On Android or a computer, use the web app.
  • The Instagram app. Nothing to connect.
  • Optional: ChatGPT, Claude or Muse, to ask for your saves from there.

Save a reel or post in three steps

Works for reels, photo posts and carousels.

  1. Tap Share on the reel or post.

Recalo shows up in your iPhone's share menu like any other app.

  2. Choose Recalo and tap send.

Don't see Recalo? Scroll the row of apps to the end, tap More, and switch it on. On Android or a computer, copy the post's link and paste it into the Recalo web app.

  3. Recalo reads the whole post.

The caption, what's said in the video, the top comments, and the text in each photo and what it shows. So a reel with no caption still saves, and so does a carousel with the recipe on its slides.

What each kind of post becomes

A recipe reel gets its ingredients and steps

Whether the amounts are in the caption, said over the clip or posted in the comments, the recipe is saved whole. Send the ingredients to your shopping list in one go.

A carousel is read photo by photo

Every photo in a carousel comes in, and Recalo reads both the words on each slide and what's pictured. A ten-slide recipe or a "what I packed" carousel arrives complete.

A saved restaurant post is saved as a place

The cafe from a food account's post becomes a place in Recalo, with its address and website when they can be found, one tap from Apple or Google Maps.

A "10 bars in Mexico City" reel becomes a note

Each bar from the reel gets its own line, linked to the bar's website or to Maps.

A bookstagram carousel becomes a note of titles

A stack of books to read becomes a note that links each one. Tell Recalo which you want and they're saved as books, cover and author included.

Workouts and routines become notes

A workout, a skincare routine, the sources from a home tour. Want to follow along? Ask for a checklist with reminders.

More on the same topic goes where it belongs

Share another reel with a new pose for your yoga note, and Recalo asks whether to "Add it to Yoga" or "Save it on its own". A to-do goes onto the checklist it belongs on.

Instagram's own Saved, and where it stops

Instagram's Save button is free and already there. Tap and hold it to file a post into a collection, or start a collaborative collection that friends can add to. Only you see what you've saved. To save a reel, tap Options, then Save.

But Instagram's help pages don't document a search in Saved, and you keep the post, not the recipe or address in it. Using both works fine: keep Saved for scrolling, and share what you want to use to Recalo.

Tips for Instagram

Where the facts come from

Comparing apps?

See apps to save Instagram posts, compared for Instagram's collections, Albo, mymind, Dewey and Raindrop side by side. Mostly restaurants and travel? See apps to save places. Mostly food? See recipe apps compared.

Saving from somewhere else? Recalo also saves from TikTok, YouTube, Reddit and Facebook.

Good to know

iPhone and iPad. Sharing from Instagram works in the iPhone and iPad app. On Android or a computer, paste the link into the web app.

Free to start. Recalo is free to download. Importing uses AI, so regular use needs Recalo Pro, $3.49 a month or $34.99 a year. What you've saved stays yours to search either way.

Questions

How do I organize my Instagram saved posts?

In Instagram, file them into collections by hand. Shared to Recalo, each post is sorted by what's in it: recipes with recipes, places with places, books with books.

How do I save recipes from Instagram reels?

Share the reel to Recalo. It saves the recipe with its ingredients and steps, even when they're only said in the video or written in the comments.

How do I save restaurants from Instagram?

Share the post to Recalo. One restaurant is saved as a place that opens in Apple or Google Maps, and a reel with a list of spots becomes a note with each one linked to Maps.

Can I bring in everything I already saved on Instagram?

Not in one go. Share the posts you want to keep. Dewey syncs your existing saves from a desktop browser, and Albo imports them on a paid plan.

Does Recalo read every photo in a carousel?

Yes. All the photos come in, and each one is read: its words and what it pictures.

Does a reel with no caption still save?

Yes. The spoken words in the reel are read, and so are the top comments.

Can other people see what I save on Instagram?

No. Instagram's help pages say only you can see your saved posts.
